Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing, in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Director of Medical Services (Leprosy), Kanyakumari District, observed World Leprosy Day with a series of awareness initiatives aimed at promoting dignity, inclusion, and understanding of leprosy.
Awareness Rally
As part of the observance, a public awareness rally was conducted on 30th January 2026. The rally was flagged off by Tmt. R. Alagumeena, IAS, District Collector of Kanniyakumari, and proceeded from the Collectorate Office to Sir C.P. Ramasamy Iyer Memorial Park.
The rally witnessed active participation from government officials, healthcare professionals, faculty members, and students of Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing, along with members of the public. Key dignitaries present included Dr. Girija, Deputy Director of Medical Services (Leprosy), and Dr. Ravi Kumar, Chief Medical Officer.
Institutional Programme Highlights
A special programme was conducted on 4th March 2026 at the college auditorium. The event began with the presentation of a memento to Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing by the chief guest, recognizing the institution’s contributions to community health initiatives.
Dr. Girija, Deputy Director of Medical Services (Leprosy), delivered a special address and an expert session on leprosy. She highlighted recent trends, emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment, and encouraged students to actively participate in community-based health awareness programmes.
Student Engagement
To encourage student involvement, a poetry competition was organized at the college. The winners were felicitated during the programme, promoting creativity and awareness on the theme of eliminating stigma and discrimination associated with leprosy.
