The Student Nurses Association (SNA) of Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing organized an awareness programme on 24th March 2026 in observance of World Tuberculosis Day, aiming to enhance understanding of tuberculosis and promote efforts toward its prevention and control.
Significance of the Day
World Tuberculosis Day is observed annually on March 24 to commemorate the historic discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882. This milestone paved the way for the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and continues to inspire global efforts to combat the disease.
The 2026 theme, announced by the World Health Organization (WHO), “Yes! We can end TB: Led by countries, powered by people,” highlights the importance of national leadership, community participation, and accelerated action through improved diagnostics, vaccination, and treatment strategies.
Programme Highlights
The programme was conducted by B.Sc. Nursing IV Year students at around 2:00 p.m. in the IV Year classroom.
The session began with a welcome address by Ms. Abisherine, B.Sc. Nursing IV Year, who greeted the participants and introduced the significance of the event.
A role play performed by IV Year students effectively conveyed the importance of World Tuberculosis Day, raising awareness about prevention, early detection, and the need to eliminate stigma associated with the disease.
Conclusion
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Mahima, B.Sc. Nursing IV Year, expressing appreciation to all participants and organizers.
The activity successfully created awareness about tuberculosis and reinforced the importance of collective efforts in working towards a TB-free society.
