Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing observed World Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 7th August 2025 with a series of awareness and educational activities aimed at promoting the importance of breastfeeding and supporting maternal and child health.
Programme Overview
B.Sc. Nursing VI Semester students actively participated in organizing and conducting various programmes throughout the week, focusing on educating mothers and the community about the benefits of breastfeeding.
Hospital-Based Activities
On 4th and 7th August 2025, awareness sessions were conducted at Dr. Jeyasekharan Hospital for antenatal and postnatal mothers.
Activities included:
- Group health education through role play, focusing on benefits, myths, and facts related to breastfeeding
- Individual health talks for admitted mothers
- Pamphlet distribution for easy reference and awareness
The sessions received active participation, with mothers engaging enthusiastically, clarifying doubts, and gaining valuable knowledge.
Community Outreach Programme
On 5th August 2025, an outreach programme was conducted at the Primary Health Centre, Rajakamangalam.
The programme featured:
- An introductory talk by Dr. Ajay Manju, Medical Officer
- Health education sessions led by Dr. Sarayu Priya, Principal, Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing
- Role play and awareness activities conducted by students
The session focused on the importance and health benefits of breastfeeding, benefiting approximately 25 mothers from the community.
Conclusion
The week-long celebration successfully enhanced awareness about breastfeeding practices and reinforced the importance of building sustainable support systems for mothers. The initiative reflected the institution’s commitment to promoting maternal and child health through education and community engagement.
