World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), observed annually on 31st May, was commemorated with a rally and pledge ceremony jointly organized by Dr. Jeyasekharan College of Nursing, Nagercoil, and the District Health and Family Welfare Department. The program aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, highlight deceptive industry marketing strategies—particularly those targeting youth—and foster a tobacco-free generation in Kanyakumari district.
Program Highlights
- Opening Pledge: The day began with a pledge administered by Mr. J. Balasubramaniam, District Income Tax Officer. The pledge called participants to:
- Abstain from all forms of tobacco and nicotine products (cigarettes, bidis, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products).
- Actively discourage friends, family, and peers from tobacco use.
- Promote tobacco-free environments in homes, institutions, and communities.
- Support tobacco control and cessation initiatives.
- Become ambassadors for a healthier, tobacco-free society.
- Rally: Students held banners and placards with impactful anti-tobacco messages, marching in solidarity for a healthier tomorrow.
- Leadership & Participation: The event saw active involvement of the District Health Officer, Principal, faculty, health department officials, and B.Sc. Nursing II and III Year students.
The collective enthusiasm of the students, combined with the support of district authorities, reflected a strong commitment to building a healthier, tobacco-free society. The program concluded around 10:30 a.m.
